Advanced Behaviour Workshops

This project is will aim to develop a nationally consistent behaviour management training package with collaboration with the Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Services.  The aim of this project is to provide training about the importance of appropriately recognising and responding to changed behaviours with the key intervention focus being on evidence based non-pharmacological and psychosocial strategies for behaviour management.

Recognising and Responding to Dementia in Indigenous Communities

Recognising and Responding to Dementia in Indigenous Communities was developed in 2009 with funding support from the SA/NT and WA Dementia Training Study Centres. This workshop is designed specifically to address the emerging needs of Indigenous populations and the practice of primary health care professionals in working with Indigenous people with dementia and the carers. The aim is to disseminate this training package nationally.

Advance Directives Workshops

This project develops and allows health professionals to undertake professional development in the areas of legal matters and decision making in relation to dementia through a series of interactive workshops.

Australian Registered Nurses Training Program

A workshop that covers best practice in dementia care for nurses completing the Australian Registered Nurses Training Program at UniSA. The workshop provides the opportunity to develop specialised dementia care skills, increase knowledge and encourage pathways for future education.

Guest Speaker Series (Lectures and workshops)

The South Australia and Northern Territory DTSC are always assessing the needs of the health and aged care sector, through this information we organise guest speakers to address these topics throughout the year. Medical Students – 5th Year Placement

A three hour interactive presentation delivered to students from the University of Adelaide at the premises of Alzheimer’s Australia South Australia. The presentation includes information on the disease process, diagnosis pathways, latest psycho-social models of care, communication and behaviour issues, and available community services.

Nursing Students Placement Program

A three hour interactive presentation delivered to second year Bachelor of Nursing students from UniSA at the premises of Alzheimer’s Australia South Australia. The presentation includes information, discussion, and activities on the disease process, person-centred care theory and application, understanding communication difficulties and issues for the person living with dementia.

Psychology Curriculum

A seminar and accompanying workbook to provide information and stimulate thinking on issues concerning dementia. Topics covered include symptoms, communication, behaviour, community support, and the provision of assistance to a person living with dementia.

Rural and Remote Training

This initiative is designed to develop and increase rural and remote health professional’s knowledge of dementia care through tailored programs. This will ensure consistent, equitable and sustainable service delivery for the particular needs of the rural and remote areas of South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Training Needs Analysis 

The aim is to use a client based approach to determine what learning/teaching resources are required to provide health professionals with the necessary skills, attributes and knowledge to deliver care and services to enhance the quality of life of people with dementia and their carers for South Australia and the Northern Territory.

Speaking My Language 

Speaking My Language is a one day workshop which aims to encourage best practice in the care of people living with dementia from CaLD backgrounds. This workshop provides the skills and background necessary for the interpretation and management of changing behaviours in people living with dementia from CaLD backgrounds.

Responding to Changed Behaviours

The workshop aims to build capacity within health professionals in this area by the use of case studies and interactive tools that seek to challenge and inform their knowledge. This will be in partnership with SA Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Services.
