About SA & NT

The South Australia and Northern Territory Dementia Training Study Centre is auspiced by Alzheimer’s Australia South Australia, and remains the only non-University based Centre in Australia.

Established in 1983, Alzheimer’s Australia SA began by providing services and support to people with Alzheimer’s disease, their families and carers. Since then, Alzheimer’s Australia SA has developed into a centre for excellence in dementia support services. Alzheimer’s Australia SA provides general education programs, offers a wide range of support services for individuals or groups, promotes community awareness, and advocates and lobbies for better services and policy.

At the South Australia and Northern Territory DTSC, through our association with Alzheimer’s Australia SA we have adopted a consumer based approach to determine the knowledge and skills required by health professionals. We also regularly engage with needs analysis to ensure we are meeting the needs of the health and aged care sectors. Through these approaches we aim to provide heath professionals with the opportunities to provide the best quality of services and care to people with dementia, their families and carers.

Our partners include all major tertiary institutions in South Australia and the Northern Territory, as well as Aged and Community Services SA and NT, and other professionals involved in major dementia projects. Our partners provide advice on developments and activities, facilitate discussion, and assist in our collaborative achievements.

We are located at the Alzheimer’s Australia SA premises at 27 Conyngham Street, Glenside, and are co-located with the South Australia Dementia Behaviour Management Advisory Services, the South Australia National Dementia Support Program, and the South Australia Dementia Care Essentials Program, which enables effective and timely consultation and collaboration. Regular communications also link us to the Dementia Collaborative Research Centres, and our relationships through Alzheimer’s Australia South Australia link us to providers of Extended Aged Care at Home – Dementia packages.

The National Priority Areas for the South Australia and Northern Territory DTSC are:

Diagnosing Dementia

From surveys conducted by the South Australia and Northern Territory DTSC, people with dementia, their carers and families have raised issues concerning gaining a timely diagnosis and information from their local GP. This project develops a nationally applicable range of education resources and tools that support awareness and training for GPs to ensure the implementation of appropriate diagnostic processes for their patients.

Younger Onset Dementia

This initiative focuses on the need for education and awareness related to the complexities of care for people with dementia who are under the age of 65. A series of tailored education modules will be delivered to metropolitan and remote and rural areas of South Australia and Northern Territory, with the flexibility to deliver the program across Australia.
