Renowned international photographer and sociologist Professor Cathy Greenblat will discuss the potential for photography to shape people’s views of dementia when she presents a free public lecture in Wollongong in May.

Titled Arts, Hearts and Minds: Photography, Art and Music in Dementia Care, the lecture is hosted by the NSW/ACT Dementia Training Study Centre.

Prof Greenblat’s Australian visit coincides with the Australian tour of her latest international photographic exhibition, Love, Loss and Laughter, from May to November 2013. It aims to broaden understanding of dementia by illustrating the stories of those living with dementia.

The Professor Emerita of Sociology at Rutgers University, New Jersey, has been taking photographs of people with dementia and their families around the world since 2001.

“My Wollongong lecture will review my photographic work and argue that while visual images can be very powerful learning tools, to date they have either not addressed dementia very much or have addressed it primarily in terms of the losses people experience,” Prof Greenblat said.

“With my photographs I’ve tried to give positive lessons about quality of life, despite memory and related challenges, and use them to help reduce fear and stigma surrounding dementia.”

Using her own photos as examples, Prof Greenblat will also discuss the role of photography, music and art in dementia care.
